80 mile Train Ride

When: Saturday, December 29th, 6:45 am, sharp
Where: Amtrak Station in Solana Beach
What: 80 mile coastal ride from Anaheim to Solana Beach
Why: Because you need a workout and riding with others is fun!

Route Slip:
1. From train station in Anaheim,
take a Right on Katella Ave.
2. Just after river, enter Santa Ana bike trail on Right.
**Bathrooms available along trail.**
3. Turn left on Hwy 1 (Pacific Coast Hwy) and head South (mile 14).
4. Stay on PCH (Hwy 1) through Newport Beach (mile 16),
Crystal Cove State Park (mile 22), Laguna Beach (mile 32).
5. Turn right Green Lantern St (mile 33.5; Dana Point).
6. Curves to the left and becomes Cove Rd.
7. Veers to right and becomes Dana Point Harbor Drive.
8. Turn Right on Beach Rd (mile 35).
9. Turn Right on Calle Deshecha (mile 39; San Clemente Train Station).
**Bathrooms; coffee shop available**
10. Follow bike route signs through San Clemente:
a. Right on W. Avenida Pico.
b. Left on Boca de la Playa.
c. Veer right on Calle Las Bolas.
d. Right on Calle Colina.
e. Veer left on Calle Sacramento.
f. Turn right on Avenida Florencia.
g. Left on Avenida de la Grulla.
h. Right on Calle Puente.
i. Right on W. Avenida Palizada (mile 40.5).
j. Left on N. Calle Seville. Becomes Avenida Santa Barbara.
k. Right on S. Ola Vista.
l. Left on Avenida Califia (mile 42; San Clemente State Beach).
11. Right on Avenida del Presidente.
12. Left on Cristianitos Rd (mile 43.5).
13. Quick right on Hwy 101 (Trestles Bike Path).
**Many bathrooms available along way**
14. Leave bike path; Turn Left on El Camino Real (mile 53.5)
**Bring ID for entering marine base**
15. Right on Las Pulgas Rd.
**Stay to left on Las Pulgas Rd. for 2 mile out and 2 mile back loop to add 4 miles**
16. After Las Pulgas loop, turn left on Stuart Mesa Rd (mile 57).
**REGROUP (refuel an bathrooms) mile 62 at Stuart Mesa Exchange (on right)**
17. Turn Right on Vandegrift (mile 64).
18. Leave base (Vandegrift turns into Harbor Drive) mile 65.
(Be very careful as bikes merge left and traffic merges right onto I-5).
19. Enter Oceanside Harbor (down hill); turn left on Harbor Drive at bottom of hill.
**Bathrooms and store available in Harbor**
20. Turn left on North Pacific St (mile 66).
21. Left on Cassidy St (mile 68.5). Go under tunnel and over train tracks.
22. Quick right on Broadway.
23. Left on Eaton St.
24. Right on Hwy 101 (PCH; mile 69).
25. Turn right on El Portal Street in Encinitas to avoid traffic (mile 79).
26. Quick right on Melrose Ave. Becomes 3rd St.
27. Left on W. K St.
28. Right on Hwy 101 (PCH; mile 79.5).
29. Continue South on 101.
30. Left on Lomas Santa Fe in Solana Beach (mile 82)
31. Return to start at corner of Cedros and Lomas Santa Fe (Train Station).

Saturday 12/22 73 hilly training ride

There will be some hills but it will be scenic and fun.

Where? Von's shopping center off of Valley Center Drive in Carmel Valley
When? Meet at 7:15 for course description. We roll at 7:30 am.
What? 73 mile base training ride
Why? B/c suffering with company is better than suffering alone

1. Start from Von's shopping center.
2. Head North (left) on Carmel Creek Rd.
3. Turn right on Carmel Country Road.
4. Turn right on Carmel Mtn. Rd. (mile 3; CCR dead ends on CMR).
5. Turn left on Carmel Mtn Rd to (mile 5; straight is El Camino Real).
6. Quick left on Vista Sorrento Pkwy (before I5).
7. Left on Sorrento Valley Blvd (mile 7). Head east past Penasquitos Canyon.
8. Becomes Calle Cristobal (mile 10).
9. Turn right on Camino Ruiz (mile 12; CC dead ends onto CR).
10. Turn left on Capricorn Way (mile 12.5).
11. Right on Black Mtn Road (mile 13.5).
12. Left on Pomerado Rd. (mile 16; BMR becomes Kearny Villa Rd mile 15.5).
13. Right on Scripps Poway Pkwy (mile 21; let the climbing begin!).
14. Left on Hwy 67 (mile 26.5).
15. Right on Dye Rd (mile 34; in Ramona).
16. Left on Ramona St (mile 36).
17. Quick right on Warnock Dr (mile 36.5).
18. Quick left on San Vicente Rd (mile 37.5).
19. Left on Main St/Hwy 67 (mile 39.5).
**Rest Stop; 7-11 (1076 Main) or Albertson's (1459 Main)**
20. Right on Highland Valley Rd (mile 42.5).
21. Left on Highland Valley Rd (mile 45; straight is Rangeland Rd).
22. Right on Pomerado Rd (mile 56).
23. Stay on this road; loops around I-15 and becomes W. Bernardo Dr.
24. Right on Bernardo Ctr Dr (mile 60).
**Rest Stop option (for emergencies only) 7-11 (15883 Bernardo Center Dr)**
25. Quick right on Camino del Norte.
26. Becomes Camino del Sur (mile 63).
*Note that Camino del Sur goes directly to bike path as well*
27. Right on Carmel Valley Rd (mile 68).
28. Enter 56 bike path west (mile 72).
29. Exit bike path and turn Right on Carmel Country Rd (mile 73).
*Note that exiting bike path at Carmel Creek Rd. is also an option*
29. Left on Carmel Creek Rd. and return to Von's shopping center (mile 73.4).

11. Veer right to stay on RSF (mile 18) at Olivenhain intersection.
12. Left onto Melrose Dr (mile 21).
13. Left on Shadowridge Dr (mile 26).

15. Quick left on Lake Blvd.
16. Left on College Blvd (mile 30).
17. College becomes Cannon again (veer right; mile 32).
18. Turn left and head south on 101 (mile 36).
19. Return to start (12 miles). Or go north on 101 to add mileage.

Rolling hills, very scenic
Traffic in RSF can be nasty, and the roads are windy and narrow (no shoulder or bike lane) so it's best to go early in the morning.

Camp Pendleton 60 mile Training Ride

Start/End from Starbucks in Carlsbad off 101

Route Slip:
1. Start @ Starbucks in Carlsbad
2. Head north on 101
3. Left on Eaton St. (mile 1)
4. Right on Broadway
5. Left on Cassidy St.
(Caution--2-way Stop; side traffic does not stop)
Over train tracks; under bridge
6. Right on Pacific St.
7. Right on Harbor Dr. South (mile 4)
Into Oceanside Harbor (there is a bathroom for emergencies)
8. Right onto Harbor Dr North (up steep hill)
be very careful of traffic merging on/off I-5
stop and show i.d. to get onto base
9. continue straight on Vandegrift (mile 5)
10. Left on Stuart Mesa (mile 6.5)
**Turn right on Mac's Rd (mile 7) for loop (option 1; extra 3-4 miles)**
bear right next intersection
turn left back onto Mac's Rd (next intersection)
continue North on Stuart Mesa (right)
11. Veer left on Stuart Mesa (mile 8.9; otherwise will end up on Hammond) 12. Left on Las Pulgas (mile 13.5)
**Turn right on Las Pulgas for loop (option 2; extra 3-4 miles)**
Out 2 miles, back 2 miles (just like CA 70.3)
Proceed West on Las Pulgas to the exit of Camp Pendleton at the Las Pulgas Gate.
13. Left on El Camino Real (mile 18)
14. Right on Old Hwy 101 after crossing over RR tracks.
15. Proceed North on Old Pacific Coast Hwy. through San Onofre State Park 16. Bear Left (North) onto Trestles Bike Path (mile 19.5)
17. Cross under I-5 and bear right
(Campground w/bathrooms up ahead, if needed.)
18. San Clemente--Turn left at into state beach for bathroom break (mile 29).
19. Head back the way we came!
**Note--can stop for snacks and fluids at convenience store on base (on Stuart Mesa, near Vandegrift @ light; mile 49) if need**

Another option:
Follow Bike Centennial signs through San Clemente:
19. Stay straight on Avenida del Presidente (just west of I-5).
20. Turn left on Avenida Califia (just past San Clemente State Beach (bathrooms for emergencies); mile 29.5)
**Decision point--continue on to coffee shop at train station or turn-around here.**
20. Quick right on S. Ola Vista.
21. Veer right to stay on S. Ola Vista (mile 30) at W Avenida de los Lobos Marinos intersection.
22. Turn left Avenida Santa Barbara (mile 31).
23. Quick right on S. Calle Sevilla.
24. Quick right on W. Avenida Palizada.
25. Left on Calle Puente (right is Avenida Miramar).
26. Left on Avenida Pelayo (mile 32).
27. Quick right on Buena Vista.
28. Veer right on Calle Colina.
29. Quick left on Calle Las Bolas/Boca de la Playa.
30. Quick right on W Avenida Pico.
31. Quick left on Calle Deshecha. Veer right at end on Avenida Estacion to get to train station.
32. Mile 36 Train station. Turn around and re-group point.
(Train station coffee shop w/chilled water and bathrooms for cyclists.)


Ride Options:
Loop 1. Turn right on Mac's Rd. @ mile 7 (add 4 miles total)
Loop 2. Turn Right (East) on Las Pulgas Road @ mile 13.5 and proceed ~2-miles to turn around (4 miles total).
Turn-around point:
1. San Clemente State Beach (bathrooms provided; slightly less mileage--just about 60)
2. San Clemente Train Station (coffee shop; slightly more mileage)
