Camp Pendleton 60 mile Training Ride

For Saturday 12/15/07
Depart at 8:00 am
Start/End from Starbucks in Carlsbad off 101
Ride is an out-and-back
Bring ID for entrance onto the base

Route Slip:
1. Start @ Starbucks in Carlsbad
2. Head north on 101
3. Left on Eaton St. (mile 1)
4. Right on Broadway
5. Left on Cassidy St.
(Caution--2-way Stop; side traffic does not stop)
Over train tracks; under bridge
6. Right on Pacific St.
7. Right on Harbor Dr. South (mile 4)
Into Oceanside Harbor (there is a bathroom for emergencies)
8. Right onto Harbor Dr North (up steep hill)
be very careful of traffic merging on/off I-5
stop and show i.d. to get onto base
9. continue straight on Vandegrift (mile 5)
10. Left on Stuart Mesa (mile 6.5)
**Turn right on Mac's Rd (mile 7) for loop (option 1; extra 3-4 miles)**
bear right next intersection
turn left back onto Mac's Rd (next intersection)
continue North on Stuart Mesa (right)
11. Veer left on Stuart Mesa (mile 8.9; otherwise will end up on Hammond) 12. Left on Las Pulgas (mile 13.5)
**Turn right on Las Pulgas for loop (option 2; extra 3-4 miles)**
Out 2 miles, back 2 miles (just like CA 70.3)
Proceed West on Las Pulgas to the exit of Camp Pendleton at the Las Pulgas Gate.
13. Left on El Camino Real (mile 18)
14. Right on Old Hwy 101 after crossing over RR tracks.
15. Proceed North on Old Pacific Coast Hwy. through San Onofre State Park 16. Bear Left (North) onto Trestles Bike Path (mile 19.5)
17. Cross under I-5 and bear right
(Campground w/bathrooms up ahead, if needed.)
18. San Clemente--Turn left at into state beach for bathroom break (mile 29).
19. Head back the way we came!
**Note--can stop for snacks and fluids at convenience store on base (on Stuart Mesa, near Vandegrift @ light; mile 49) if need**

Another option:
Follow Bike Centennial signs through San Clemente:
19. Stay straight on Avenida del Presidente (just west of I-5).
20. Turn left on Avenida Califia (just past San Clemente State Beach (bathrooms for emergencies); mile 29.5)
**Decision point--continue on to coffee shop at train station or turn-around here.**
20. Quick right on S. Ola Vista.
21. Veer right to stay on S. Ola Vista (mile 30) at W Avenida de los Lobos Marinos intersection.
22. Turn left Avenida Santa Barbara (mile 31).
23. Quick right on S. Calle Sevilla.
24. Quick right on W. Avenida Palizada.
25. Left on Calle Puente (right is Avenida Miramar).
26. Left on Avenida Pelayo (mile 32).
27. Quick right on Buena Vista.
28. Veer right on Calle Colina.
29. Quick left on Calle Las Bolas/Boca de la Playa.
30. Quick right on W Avenida Pico.
31. Quick left on Calle Deshecha. Veer right at end on Avenida Estacion to get to train station.
32. Mile 36 Train station. Turn around and re-group point.
(Train station coffee shop w/chilled water and bathrooms for cyclists.)


Ride Options:
Loop 1. Turn right on Mac's Rd. @ mile 7 (add 4 miles total)
Loop 2. Turn Right (East) on Las Pulgas Road @ mile 13.5 and proceed ~2-miles to turn around (4 miles total).
Turn-around point:
1. San Clemente State Beach (bathrooms provided; slightly less mileage--just about 60)
2. San Clemente Train Station (coffee shop; slightly more mileage)
